vs. Lincoln Memorial
Hawaii wins 25-9, 25-17, 27-25
After the Warriors dispatched the Railsplitters in 82 minutes two nights earlier, a Sunday afternoon crowd was not expecting much of a challenge by the third-year program from Harrogate, Tenn. Particularly after Hawaii cruised in a Set 1 in which Lincoln Memorial managed just four kills and the Warriors had 13 digs.
With only two starters playing in Set 2, the Warriors played well down the stretch, turning an 18-16 lead into a 24-16 one. Things got dicier in Set 3 and, for the first time since a 27-25 Set 2 against Stanford on Feb. 1, Hawaii needed extra time to pull it out.
Down 24-22, the Warriors reinserted several starters, then held off three set points (24-22, 24-23, 25-24). Senior hitter Stijn van Tilburg put down the final two kills for Hawaii’s 10th consecutive sweep.
Set 2 vs. Stanford was less dramatic. The Cardinal’s last lead was 22-21. It was tied four times after that, the first at 22, the last at 25. Senior hitter Stijn van Tilburg put down his 11th kill for the Warriors’ third set point and junior opposite Rado Parapunov ended it with his match-high 17th.
