Join in on a “shell-ebration” of World Turtle Day with interactive activities centered around Hawaii’s beloved honu, or Hawaiian green sea turtle, Saturday at Sea Life Park in partnership with Malama Na Honu. There will be activity stations where keiki can learn how the park weighs, measures, tracks and cares for honu, even a station where they can interact with the park’s juvenile turtles.
Following the park activities, a honu from Sea Life Park’s Hawaiian green sea turtle breeding program will be released into the waters across the park. The ceremony includes a traditional Hawaiian blessing before the release.
Sea Life Park’s Honu Habitat is home to the only active breeding colony of green sea turtles in the country, noted the park’s general manager Valerie King, speaking about the honu release ceremony.
“We’re delighted that on a day when the world comes together to celebrate these special animals and raise awareness for conservation efforts, that we will have a honu from the park’s ohana ready for this incredible journey,” King said.
