The University of Hawaii Wahine softball team edged Cal State Northridge 2-1 in eight innings on Friday in Northridge, Calif.
The Wahine (31-13, 12-4 Big West) and Matadors (24-25, 8-8 Big West) went scoreless through the first seven innings.
Hawaii scored its pair of runs on an RBI single by Nicole Lopez and an RBI fielder’s choice by Callee Heen scoring Sissy Pantastico.
Redshirt senior Brittany Hitchcock secured the win in the bottom of the eighth with a strikeout with two outs and the bases loaded.
Ex-University of Hawaii libero Tita Akiu makes USA 30-player roster
Former Hawaii libero Tita Akiu was named to USA Volleyball’s 30-player roster for the upcoming FIVB Volleyball Nations League on Friday.
She is one of four liberos vying for a spot on the final 25-player roster that will be announced May 11. The U.S., the defending champion, hosts opening pool-play matches against No. 4 Brazil, No. 9 Korea and No. 13 Germany on June 4-6 in Lincoln, Neb.
The assistant coach is Kalani graduate Tama Miyashiro, former All-America libero at Washington.
Hilo baseball splits doubleheader
The Hawaii Hilo baseball team split its doubleheader against Biola on Friday, winning the first game 6-5 and dropping the second 2-1.
The Vulcans (26-19, 21-11 Big West) played their last pair of games in the regular season and finished second in the Pacific West Conference. This marks the best season for Hilo since 1989, when the Vulcans went 28-17-1 and qualified for the NAIA World Series.
In the first game, Hilo scored four in the fifth inning and leaned on sophomore John Kea, who earned the save.
