Long Beach State senior hitter TJ DeFalco became the fourth player in NCAA Division I-II men’s volleyball history to win player of the year honors twice on Wednesday night.
The award was presented during the AVCA All-America Banquet at the Terrace Theater in Long Beach, Calif. Hawaii’s Joe and Gage Worsley, Rado Parapunov and Stijn van Tilburg received their first-team awards and Patrick Gasman his second-team award.
DeFalco, who also won the award in 2017, joins UCLA’s Jeff Nygaard, Pepperdine’s George Roumain and Hawaii’s Costas Theocharidis as a two-time winner. It is the third consecutive year that a 49er has won the top award, a record. Setter Josh Tuaniga was player of the year in 2018.
DeFalco is also one of three players to be a four-time AVCA first-team All-American. The others are Theocharidis (2000-03) and Stanford’s Erik Shoji (2009-2012).
