University of Hawaii women’s tennis player Petra Melounova has qualified to compete in the NCAA Division I Singles Championship for a program-record third straight season.
The junior from the Czech Republic earned an automatic bid into the championship tournament — set for May 20-25 in Orlando, Fla. — as the highest-ranked player in the Big West Conference.
Melounova is No. 60 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings with a 13-2 dual-match record at No. 1 singles for the Rainbow Wahine.
Hawaii water polo earns Big West honors
The University of Hawaii water polo team earned multiple Big West honors on Tuesday, including senior Irene Gonzalez as the repeat Big West player of the year and Maureen Cole as the Big West coach of the year.
Gonzalez and junior Elyse Lemay-Lavoie represented the Big West tournament champion Rainbow Wahine on the All-Big West first team, while senior Femke Aan was named to the second team.
Freshmen Maxine Schaap and Emma van Rossum were named All-Big West honorable mentions and earned a place on the All-Freshman Team.
