Brent Grant shot a tournament- and course-record 11-under-par 61 during the first round of the Mid-Pacific Open on Thursday at Mid-Pacific Country Club.
Grant, who had seven birdies and two eagles during his round, has a seven-shot lead over PJ Samiere in the professional flight.
Grant, a Moanalua and BYU-Hawaii alumnus, has conditional status on the Web.com Tour.
Hawaii Pacific baseball shuts out Holy Names
Joshua Savea allowed three hits over seven innings with eight strikeouts as the Hawaii Pacific baseball team beat Holy Names 6-0 on Thursday at Hans L’Orange Park.
Cole Mayeshiro and Christian Miller each worked one inning of relief for the Sharks (22-25, 9-20 PacWest).
Tanner Tokunaga drove in two runs and Kyle Layugan had three hits for HPU.
The Hawks fell to 14-27, 8-17.
Makia Manuel advances at Bells Beach
Hawaii’s Malia Manuel beat Australia’s Stephanie Gilmore in the quarterfinals of the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach today in Bells Beach, Australia.
Manuel beat the seven-time world champion 10.77 to 8.70.
Manuel will face Florida’s Caroline Marks in the semifinals.
