The Hawaii beach volleyball team will take a No. 5 ranking into this week’s Big West tournament at Zuma Beach, Calif.
The three-time defending champion Rainbow Wahine (24-7) traded spots with Pepperdine (20-9), Hawaii moving up to fifth and the Waves down to No. 6 after losing twice in last week’s West Coast Conference championship tournament.
The top four remained the same, with UCLA (28-1) a unanimous No. 1, followed by USC (24-4), Florida State (28-5) and LSU (29-6).
Big West member Cal Poly (21-10) dropped a spot to eighth and Long Beach State (18-9) was down two spots to 12.
The NCAA tournament field will be announced on Sunday. Hawaii has finished third nationally the past two seasons.
Hilo baseball sweeps Holy Names
The University of Hawaii Hilo baseball team swept a doubleheader against Holy Names on Monday at Wong Stadium, 5-3 and 6-2.
The Vulcans (22-15, 18-10 PacWest) rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning in the first game, scoring two runs on RBI singles by senior Dylan Sugimoto and freshman Casey Yamauchi to take the lead.
In the second game, Hilo was led by sophomore Travis Burleson, who pitched five innings, striking out four while allowing six hits.
