Having had both of my children delivered by certified midwives, I firmly believe they should be regulated (“Bill to regulate midwives in Hawaii reveals divide,” Star-Advertiser, April 15).
After making the choice to have our children at home in much more comfortable surroundings, we chose a midwife. We had to take classes (and I’m glad I did) to learn what to expect and what the procedures were, as well as having mandatory supplies available on hand. We actually pretend-practiced the birth. (I was 21 at the time.)
When the big day came, two midwives showed up. They brought medical supplies and suture kits, and even an oxygen bottle.
There were some complications but the midwife saw us through them. That’s all I remember.
I woke up in the next room with an oxygen mask on my face: I fainted. My wife and new daughter Jade were fine. You never know what could happen during an at-home birth. Best leave it to the pros.
