Damien Kaimana Barcarse, West Hawaii regional director for Kamehameha Schools, has been nominated by Gov. David Ige to fill the Hawaii County seat on the Board of Education.
His appointment is subject to Senate confirmation, and a hearing is scheduled for this afternoon in the Senate Education Committee.
Barcarse, who speaks fluent Hawaiian, has been with Kamehameha Schools since 2013.
Previously, he taught ethno-zoology as well as voyaging and navigation classes at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. He also is a longtime deejay and producer for Hawaiian- language programming on KWXX-FM.
Barcarse would replace Patricia Bergin; his term would begin July 1. Ige also reappointed Kenneth Uemura and Bruce Voss to the board for additional three-year terms starting July 1.
