The No. 2 Punahou softball team kept its composure to clinch a state-tournament berth.
D’Asha Saiki doubled on the first pitch of the bottom of the eighth inning and scored on one of four ‘Iolani errors to give the host Buffanblu an 8-7 victory in a tiebreaker for the ILH regular-season title.
Saiki doubled in her final two at-bats and scored three times for the Buffanblu (14-3), who will play in consecutive state tournaments for the first time since making it four years in a row from 2010 to ’13.
“We know we’re going to play on, but we were here last year in the same place,” Punahou coach David “Boy” Eldredge said. “Last year at this time we came back and didn’t do well in the tournament and didn’t do well in the championship game and we have to be ready for this coming week.”
Punahou lost its next two games after winning the regular season and hasn’t won an ILH softball title since 2005.
By beating ‘Iolani (13-4) for the third time in a row, the Buffanblu guaranteed at worst a one-game playoff to break that string should it fall short in the tournament.
The first two wins were by a combined score of 19-7, but the third meeting was a back-and-forth affair that saw three lead changes.
‘Iolani trailed 7-6 in the seventh when Kalena Markham blasted a solo homer with one out to force extra innings.
Punahou’s Ashanti Martinez, who went the distance to earn the victory, pitched her only 1-2-3 inning in the top of the eighth as the sun continued to fall and darkness started to creep in.
Punahou had runners on first and second with nobody out in the bottom of the eighth when Martinez hit a grounder to third that got past the third baseman.
Saiki collided with the fielder as she rounded third but still had plenty of time to make it home for the win.
“Coming off the bag I saw this high chopper and thought ‘Oh man, we’re going to get out,’ ” Saiki said. “Lucky on that one.”
Allie Capello hit a two-run homer for ‘Iolani in the first inning and Aleia Agbayani added a solo homer in the fourth inning to put ‘Iolani ahead 5-3.
The Raiders led 6-5 entering the bottom of the sixth when Tiani Wayton’s fly ball to right field was misplayed, allowing her to reach second.
Saiki drove in Wayton when her hit bounced over the right-field fence and then took third on a flyout when the throw back into the infield got away from the defense.
Martinez hit a comebacker to Ailana Agbayani, who pitched the first seven innings for the Raiders. Agbayani tried to go quick to get Saiki going back to third, but the throw was low and got away from Taylor Kai, allowing Saiki to score.
Neither team had committed an error until the sixth inning.
“We made mistakes and they capitalized on it,” ‘Iolani coach Benny Agbayani said. “We didn’t take control of our own game, so this is the result.”
Martinez walked eight batters but gave up just three runs after the second inning with a defense behind her that didn’t commit an error.
“We had a couple of uncharacteristically bad innings against St. Francis a couple of days ago, and so to see them come back and play the way they did today was good,” Eldredge said.
Punahou could have avoided a tiebreaker but lost to the Saints on Friday while the Raiders beat Maryknoll.
The single-elimination tournament begins Wednesday with Punahou earning a bye and ‘Iolani hosting Sacred Hearts.
