The state Department of Transportation announced this afternoon that it has completed repairs to a section of Kamehameha Highway in Hauula that suffered from coastal erosion damage ahead of schedule.

Work on the highway near Hulahula Place in Hauula began on Friday, and was originally expected to be done in the middle of this week.

Residents in the area had been complaining about the deteriorating, two-lane highway for at least two years, and the section had been marked with safety barricades and cones, but continued to worsen.

As part of the repairs, crews reset concrete blocks to serve as part of an erosion control system and filled the area behind them with a concrete mix, state officials said. Crews also repaved the highway, and installed boulders to create a slope matching the surrounding shoreline.

The repairs required the closure of the northbound lane between Pokiwai Place and Hulahula Place from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekends.

The state said it would leave concrete barriers in place at the shoulder until guardrail work is completed. The public will be notified when the guardrail installation is scheduled.
