When questioned at a recent City Council committee meeting about why an Ala Moana Regional Park site was chosen for a 1-acre Americans with Disabilities Act-accessible playground with a zipline and water features, Design and Construction Department Deputy Director Mark Yonamine, after some thought, responded with two reasons: It was close to L&L restaurant, and the area selected was “underutilized.” Period.
Later, city Deputy Managing Director Georgette Deemer chimed in that it was selected so playground visitors might also opt to go to the beach.
It appears that the city, eager to ram this Kobayashi Group offer down the throats of longtime park lovers, has no compelling reason for picking this site, and what’s more, can’t agree on one.
