‘Billy V’ returns to Hawaiian 105 KINE after 5-year hiatus
William Van Osdol, a longtime TV and radio personality known as “Billy V,” is back on the radio on the weekends.
He joined Hawaiian 105 KINE on Saturdays from 12 to 6 p.m., playing songs from Hawaii’s top musicians and sharing behind-the-scenes stories from celebrities and other special guests. He started April 6.
Van Osdol will also continue working as the entertainment reporter for Hawaii News Now Sunrise.
“It wasn’t until recently that the stars aligned and both managements on radio and the TV side said it was OK,” he said. “There is a certain nervousness and excitement about being in front of the camera and getting your story correct and delivering it, while working with your producers and co-workers to do everything right. There is the same nervousness on the radio side, but these days it’s more like an old friend that I’ve known.”
Radio DJ Mele Apana, known as “Mento Mele,” made a plea to get Van Osdol to return to radio. Van Osdol said he decided to return to Hawaiian 105 KINE, where he worked five years ago.
“The music, the artists and listener interaction, it is something you miss, but it’s not something I want to do full time,” Van Osdol said. “Itʻs nice to just dip in that pool to refresh yourself once a week. Itʻs an exciting part of my weekend now. I wasn’t sure what the response would be, but on social media it was immediate. It was like visiting my hometown of Kona for the day: relaxing. Then you gear up and get energized for Monday thru Friday with my team from Sunrise.”
