Column: The power of perspective

Being able to reframe challenging situations to your advantage can transform your life experiences and help you to rise above anything that brings you down emotionally.

It allows you to see through anything that traps you mentally.

It allows you to gain vision and keeps you centered. Perspective helps you to find solutions and pursue opportunities that you wouldn’t find if you kept a limited perspective. When you intentionally notice what you haven’t noticed before, you open yourself up to unprecedented possibilities.

Have you ever gone into your kitchen and noticed the clean dishes instead of the dirty dishes? Don’t we usually focus on the “negative” of the dirty dishes and, if there are a lot, feel upset? However, what if you went into your kitchen and noticed the clean dishes first — the dirty dishes would still be there, but they would seem minimal in proportion. When “dirty” is not the main focus, you’re likely to be less upset.

With the uncertainty and challenges we face in life, the outcome depends on your perspective, and that in turn will drive your choices. What we see depends on what we are looking for. Develop the ability to reframe situations, as this will profoundly affect your life and how you relate to others.

DAILY MISSION: In every situation, consciously choose to look for the objective perspective. Look at it from the other person’s perspective. Go into the future and look back and see it from the perspective of time passing. Look at it from a nonjudgmental perspective. Consider every angle.
