Those who help people living on the streets are a special breed, taking action against the homelessness problem instead of just complaining about it.
The couple that runs the Revive + Refresh mobile hygiene center, for example, tows a shower trailer to homeless encampments around Oahu, making much-needed hot showers available to street people. They have a 5-year, $400,000 contract with the city for this, and that’s good. What’s not so good, though, is that they also hand out food, against the city’s wishes.
On-spot feeding is controversial: It can enable homelessness and keep people from seeking more-comprehensive and lasting help at homeless shelters.
Some Arizona oversight, at last
It’s hard to get too excited about pledges from the National Park Service to restore access to the Arizona Memorial by fall. This is just the latest promised delivery date for the repairs to the dock allowing visitors to walk onto the memorial from the boat. The other deadlines were all missed. And NPS has the Hawaii congressional delegates finally demanding monthly updates on the progress. That’s nice. It would have been nicer had the D.C. contingent been doing its oversight job before now.
