The Honolulu chapter of the American Institute of Architects is inviting the public to celebrate Architecture Month in April by signing up for events highlighting the importance of design and environmental awareness. Most events are free; however, reservations are required. Visit aiahonolulu.org/events to sign up or learn more. Here are some highlights:
>> Design Firm Crawl — 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, downtown Honolulu. Visit up to 15 firms in the central business district to learn more about architectural, interior and landscape design, and meet the designers. Some may provide light refreshments.
>> Architectural Walking Tour at Punahou School — 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. April 20, 1601 Punahou St., meet in front of the Gathering Hall at Omidyar K-1 Neighborhood; cost, $15. Docent-guided tours in groups of 10 will explore a general history of the historic campus and focus on Punahou’s sustainable initiatives in about two hours. Many of the docents have been involved in the planning and design of the campus.
>> Urban Sketchers O‘ahu at Punahou School — 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. April 20, Punahou’s Dillingham Hall Lanai, 1601 Punahou St. Sketchers of all skill levels will team up with Urban Sketchers to chronicle this historic school in any medium.
>> “Jens Jensen The Living Green” — 6 to 8 p.m. April 26, Center for Architecture, 828 Fort Street Mall, Suite 100. See the award-winning film, “Jens Jensen The Living Green,” a biographic documentary of the man named “the dean of landscape architects” by the New York Times in the late 1880s for his work in Chicago. Jensen’s parks were designed to be naturalistic play spaces for adults and children, most of whom lived in destitute squalor.
>> Architectural Photography Workshop — 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 27, Center of Architecture, 828 Fort Street Mall. Cost: $75 for AIA members, $105, non-AIA members, and $55, students; lunch not included. Architectural photographer David Franzen and architects Ted Garduque and Geoffrey Lewis will present a lecture on composition, strategies and techniques, followed by a three-hour photo shoot in the downtown Honolulu area. A three-hour critique session will follow with editing examples using Lightroom software that provides each participant with the opportunity to share selected images. Participants will receive one 16-by-20-inch image printed and mounted by Honblue Inc. Ideally required: Digital camera, laptop to download and review images, thumb drive to transfer images to server.
