The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the boy who died in Thursday’s kayak accident off Kaaawa as Alaric K. Chiu, 5, of Honolulu.

Initial reports listed Chiu’s age as 6 years old.

The kayak accident occurred during a Mid-Pacific Institute spring break camp program. Chiu was a participant of the program but not a current student of the school.

Maria Davis, 63, of Waimanalo, an assistant of the spring break program, was the second person who died in the accident after their kayak overturned in waters approximately 150 yards off of Puakenikeni Road in Kaaawa at about 11:35 a.m.

Approximately 24 firefighters included Air 1 responded to the scene and rescued two children and an unresponsive woman later identified as Davis, wife of Mid-Pacific Chaplain Wendell Davis.

Honolulu Fire Spokesman Capt. Scot Seguirant said a Good Samaritan rescued an unresponsive child later identified as Chiu from the kayak group and brought him to shore.

Firefighters and Ocean Safety officials administered CPR on Chiu and Davis and transferred care to Emergency Medical Services personnel who conducted advanced life support treatment on them.

They were taken in critical condition to a hospital and later pronounced dead.
