Some things never recovered from Hurricane Iniki. The old Coco Palms Resort in Kapaa, severely damaged in the 1992 storm, has been closed ever since.
Efforts to resurrect it have faltered, and now the property is for sale again. If it ever is reborn, the iconic ’60s-era hotel will likely contend with amenities it never had — WiFi, for one — and with the contemporary scourge of Kuhio Highway traffic.
Perhaps its day, like in the torch-lighting ceremonies the Palms made famous, has been snuffed out.
UH men’s volleyball on a roll
It’s been a treat following the University of Hawaii volleyball men’s team lately, especially for longtime fans who have seen ups and downs for the squad in recent years. Well, it’s now a definite “up” period. The team is ranked No. 1 for the first time in four years, and is on a NCAA-record streak of consecutive victorious sets. Let’s keep that momentum going against UC San Diego this weekend, and well beyond.
