About half of the population in our jails are pre-trial detainees. Anyone charged with a non-violent crime should be released without bail. This would allow homeless criminals to be incarcerated.
There is only one way to solve the homeless problem: Don’t allow anybody to live on public property anywhere, anytime.
Offer choices: temporary shelter, financial assistance for rent, rehabilitation for substance abuse, treatment for mental illness (mandatory with a court order). But, anyone living on public property needs to be disrupted immediately. It’s against the law and the public good. Take it through the courts. I would gladly have my tax dollars spent to return to the public what is rightfully ours.
Half measures do not and will not work. If we continue on our present path, more and more residents (taxpayers and future taxpayers) will leave paradise lost.
