Foodland Super Market Ltd. is overhauling its business in Pearl City with plans to replace its 61-year-old grocery store with a new, larger outlet featuring more offerings later this year.
The local company announced Wednesday that it expects to close the Pearl City Foodland at the end of summer and open a new Foodland Farms store a mile away in the fall.
Foodland’s move will expand the retailer’s collection of more upscale stores, and offer customers in the community some new options including a HI Steaks counter and more prepared foods along with expanded selections of produce, meat, seafood and other items.
The new store will occupy 45,000 square feet at Pearl City Gateway Center and replace a 30,000-square-foot store that opened in 1958 at Pearl City Shopping Center.
Pearl City Gateway opened in 2009 with anchor tenant Longs Drugs. Other original tenants included Checker Auto Parts, Petco and the first Hawaii location for
Babies R Us. Foodland Farms is moving into space vacated by Babies R Us.
Pearl City Shopping Center is anchored by Foodland, Don Quijote and Longs Drugs.
Foodland was founded in 1958 and has 33 grocery stores statewide operating under three brand names: Foodland, Foodland Farms and Sack N Save.
