Sixteen more inmates have been identified in the March 11 riot at Maui Community Correctional Center.

The Department of Public Safety said the pre-trial inmates who did not start the disturbance but “participated in a smaller capacity” were transported to Halawa Correctional Facility on Oahu at around 11 a.m. today.

MCCC staff confirmed that the inmates played a role in the disturbance and the immediate aftermath.

However, five detainees who were brought to Halawa on the original flight were returned to MCCC today, the news release said.

According to a DPS spokesperson, the original list of inmates was based on preliminary information, and this was subject to change once more facts came in and follow up interviews confirmed that the five inmates did not contribute to the disturbance.

A total of 32 inmates have been transferred to Halawa due to the disturbance.

Once all inmates responsible for the incident are confirmed, they will be brought up on criminal charges, DPS said, as well as internal disciplinary action.

The Department of Public Safety points to extreme overcrowding conditions as the motive for the disturbance and subsequent unrest.
