Kudos to the Kokonut Koalition, a group of hikers that called attention to the city’s “benign neglect” of Koko Crater trail. City proposals now in the works to patch wooden crossties on the trail are a much-needed step in the right direction. Mayor Kirk Caldwell’s proposed budget for fiscal year 2020 seeks $1 million for trail upkeep; and City Councilman Joey Manahan wants to tag funding for a study on long-term site improvement. The popular 1,048-step trail — formerly World War II tramway tracks — to panoramic South Shore views at the crater’s summit is an increasingly challenging ascent due to eroding terrain and structural wear-and-tear.
Making a move to Alii Place
For the nearly $1.4 million required to lease City Council temporary office space at Alii Place, there might be a public benefit — or two.
For one thing, it seems inevitable that the move would be made, given the need for asbestos removal and other upgrades to Honolulu Hale.
For another, the Council may be able to keep an eye on the troublesome city prosecutor’s office, as well as the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation. At least they’ll all be in the same building.
