The abrupt resignation of Sam Millington as executive director of Partners in Care — the continuum-of-care nonprofit agency that coordinates services to the homeless — is another bump in a bumpy road. Millington arrived fairly recently, but it’s a challenging post to fill under the best of circumstances. And now the release of his resignation memo, detailing his frustration, won’t make it easier.
Wanted: a nonpolitical executive geared up to manage the politically sensitive subject of homelessness.
Much kokua for Kokua Market co-op
The local kokua pouring in for Moiliili’s long-standing natural foods cooperative is heartening. In response to financial challenges that have threatened to shutter the aptly named Kokua Market, a successful fundraising effort, which involved selling co-op shares to more than 400 new and existing members, is keeping the doors open.
How to stay afloat as mega-retailers now offer a similar grocery lineup? “Kokua 2020 Initiative” features a variety of site improvements, such as a bar serving coffee, juice, smoothies, beer and wine; more bulk items, including olive oils and vinegar; and more discount perks for members.
