The University of Hawaii softball team played a doubleheader Friday in the Hawaii Invitational at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium, dropping the first game to DePaul 4-3 and then beating New Mexico 3-2.
Bree Soma and Nicole Lopez homered for the Rainbow Wahine in the opener.
The Wahine’s game against DePaul on Sunday at 2 p.m. was canceled due to scheduling conflicts.
In the second game, the Wahine scored two in the third to go up 2-1, then came through with the winning run in the fifth.
Hawaii Pacific crushes Chaminade
The Hawaii Pacific and Chaminade softball teams faced off on Friday in a pair of games at Central Oahu Regional Park.
In the first game, the Sharks crushed the Silverswords 12-0 with 16 hits through five innings.
Jordan Curry allowed eight hits with three strikeouts in five innings for the win.
In the second game, HPU scored six in the top of the seventh to complete an 11-3 win. The Sharks had 11 hits, including three homers in the game.
The Silverswords got a three-run homer from Marlisa Berrelleza.
UH swimming and diving in first at MPSF
The Hawaii men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams both added to their leads in Day 3 of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championships.
The men are ahead of UC Santa Barbara in the standings, 297.5 to 234, while the women gained a big lead on UC Davis, 538 to 392.
UH finished the day with eight first-place finishes — two relay victories and six individual wins.
The teams will finish the competition today in La Mirada, Calif.
Hawaii water polo tops San Jose State
The fifth-ranked University of Hawaii women’s water polo team defeated San Jose State 13-5 on Friday to start the Barbara Kalbus Invitational in Irvine, Calif.
The Rainbow Wahine (9-1) were led offensively by Emma van Rossum and Bernadette Doyle, who each scored two goals.
Hawaii continues the tournament against fourth-ranked Cal today.
UH men’s golf improves in second round
The University of Hawaii men’s golf team improved eight strokes from its rough opening day with a 296 in the second round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at Wailua Golf Course on Kauai.
The Rainbow Warriors are tied for 19th place with a 600 total. No. 11 Arizona State sits at the top with 558, followed by No. 2 Duke with a 560. Texas A&M is in at third at 564.
The final round is today.
