As a lifelong professing Catholic, I am appalled and extremely frustrated by the seemingly unending and almost universal occurrence of sexual abuse of minors and adults by Catholic clergy. Yes, abuse occurs everywhere, but not in this broad, if not sanctioned, form.
His Eminence, the Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, now 88, was found guilty of abusing minors, seminarians and priests over a period of many years. This was well known in Catholic circles. The cardinal has been defrocked and the now Mr. McCarrick lives temporarily in a friary in Kansas until a final residence is found.
In Hawaii, a sexual abuser was recently sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment. It is time for another reformer like Martin Luther in the Catholic Church.
