Year of the boar: A craftsman paints around the eye of a daruma doll shaped like a wild boar, this year’s animal in the Chinese zodiac calendar, at the Arai Darumaya studio in Hiratsuka, Kanagawa Prefecture. The studio began making such daruma dolls 15 years ago, depicting the 12 animals in the calendar in turn. Their decorative motifs are done in gold, a distinctive feature of daruma dolls made in the city.
