After reading the editorial, “Build affordable homes with solar” (Star-Advertiser, Our View, Feb. 5), I felt the need to comment on the idea that solar energy is the best solution for heating water.
Although it’s difficult to argue against the merits of solar when considering the desire to convert to totally renewable energy by 2045, there are other aspects of efficiency that are not being considered.
My wife and I are planning to remodel our 62-year-old home. Our plan for saving space and energy is to avoid using a traditional water heater, which takes up a considerable amount of space and is rather inefficient, and instead heat water with a tankless gas water heater.
This type of water heater is far more efficient when powered by gas than electricity.
In addition, it takes up very little space on the wall inside a closet.
As I’ve seldom seen this point being made, I thought it important to bring up. On Oahu, this is a sustainable alternative.
