The story, “Hawaii could house missile interceptors sooner than later” (Star-Advertiser, Feb. 3), offers small consolation and little sense of peace in terms of a future attack by North Korean nuclear missiles.
North Korea has attained its nuclear and long-range missile technology because of Chinese and Russian military assistance. I would hope our leaders make clear to the leadership of China and Russia that any attack on America by North Korean missiles, nuclear or not, will be regarded as a direct attack against America by these countries.
China and Russia must not be allowed to build a nuclear-armed proxy and expect no retaliation in full force by America. President John Kennedy made this policy quite explicit to Premier Nikita Khrushchev during the Soviet nuclear arming of Cuba in 1962.
Let all countries be properly and firmly warned of this MAD (mutually assured destruction) policy. China and Russia may not be willing to trade Beijing and Moscow for Honolulu.
