As much as we try to “drive with aloha” every day, it takes only a moment in time for a tragedy to occur. We are all shocked and saddened by the deaths of three pedestrians who were not even walking but were standing where they thought was a safe place. My heart breaks for their families and friends, even though I did not know them personally.
On the day after the accident, I was driving on Wilder Avenue when a driver going in the opposite direction held out his hand, motioning to stop. I made eye contact with him immediately and as I slowed down, I saw a man in the crosswalk in front of his car. I stopped to let him cross. I was grateful for the warning and how that simple act of aloha and quick thinking probably saved a life.
We can all share the road to make it safe for everyone. The thought of taking a life when I’m behind the wheel scares me, and I would have to live with that for the rest of my life.
