There are at least six singing choirs, a couple of bands and orchestras (not counting the Hawaii Symphony), and probably several other performance groups on Oahu.
What this island doesn’t have, however, is a venue specifically designed for those smaller groups. The Blaisdell Concert Hall and the Hawaii Theater are too big, the Doris Duke Theater is too small, and the Pearl City Cultural Center concert hall is too far away. And the last two don’t have adequate parking nearby.
The only other option for these groups is to rely on churches, but many don’t have adequate parking, or the sanctuaries are not suitable for large groups.
What I would like to propose is that when the new stadium is built in Halawa, a 500-700 seat theater suitable for small ensembles is included. If properly constructed, with good acoustics, backstage areas, seating and instruments, this venue would be perfect for all the community and school ensembles on Oahu, with plenty of parking.
