We’ve had some recent political theater on the national stage. Most of us realize how bad the productions have been. No playwrights will acknowledge writing these turkeys. The actors don’t know their lines; their elocution is unintelligible; they don’t know when to step on stage and when to step off; they don’t realize that people are guffawing when they take on the jut-jaw Mussolini pose, and are silent as stones when they do try for a laugh.
Fortunately, here in Hawaii, we have plenty of high-quality theater. For the sake of our personal enjoyment and collective sanity, let’s pay more attention to the talent that is on stage locally, and less to the drama emanating from the nation’s capital. For instance, the production of “Avenue Q” at Manoa Valley Theatre, was vastly better than “Shutdown!” in Washington, D.C.
