Many thanks for publishing Matthew LoPresti’s comments on the issues that emerged from his recent Senate race defeat (“Hawaii’s high legal standard for election recount unrealistic,” Star-Advertiser, Island Voices, Jan. 10).
It was especially welcome due to the Star Advertiser’s past coverage of this issue (“LoPresti challenges Ewa Senate race results,” Star-Advertiser, Nov. 28, 2018), which gave fulsome space for the Honolulu County Republican Party chairman to attack LoPresti’s character — not his record — without affording him the opportunity to respond.
LoPresti’s comments in his column were so temperate about these attacks, so candid as to his past errors, and so focused on the need to address flaws in Hawaii’s election laws (laws the Legislature has just now begun to reform), as to be precisely what we need to hear from our elected officials and rarely do.
It can only be hoped that the electorate will soon return him to the public arena he has served with unquestioned devotion.
