The Kalani Falcons have plenty of offense, but a lockdown defense doesn’t hurt, either.
Kamalu Kamakawiwo‘ole led the way with 21 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, three steals and six blocks as No. 4 Kalani trounced Leilehua 67-47 on Thursday night at Earl C. Holmer Gymnasium.
Kalani (19-6) advanced to the semifinal round of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I girls basketball playoffs. As the East’s second seed, Kalani will meet Mililani, the first-place team from the West, at 5 p.m., Tuesday at Radford.
Freshman point guard Kalena Halunajan added 16 points, Alayna Akiona scored nine and Shelby McDaniel tallied eight points and three blocks for the Falcons.
“We’ve seen Mililani play in the McKinley tournament. We always knew in the OIA playoffs we would meet Mililani in the finals or semifinals, so it’s going to be a good game,” Kalani coach Chi Mok said. “We’ve been playing sluggish. We’ve had a couple of good practices and a couple of not so good practices, but our energy level today was good. We did some of the things we talked about, which were block out, rebounding, crashing the offensive boards early.”
Asia Castillo led Leilehua (9-4) with 20 points and 13 rebounds. The Mules will host Moanalua on Tuesday in an elimination game with a state-tournament berth at stake. Leilehua is the higher seed.
“We played our hearts out,” Mules coach Elroy Dumlao said. “Kalani is pretty much the most talented team we’ve faced. We couldn’t match up on the post or in transition.”
The home team got untracked midway through the first quarter using a 2-2-1 fullcourt press. Kamakawiwo‘ole seemed to be everywhere with four of her six rebounds on the offensive glass in the opening period. She also blocked three shots and scored eight points, hitting a pair of treys. Her second 3 was a buzzer-beater from 25 feet out as Kalani opened a 22-11 lead.
Leilehua’s season-long leading scorer, Kaylen Kamelamela, picked up her third personal foul with 1:44 left in the first quarter and sat for most of the remaining minutes of the first half.
Kalani dropped the fullcourt pressure at times, but coasted to a 32-14 lead before Castillo hit three foul shots in the final seconds of the half. Kamelamela was assessed her fourth foul late in the second quarter.
“She got into foul trouble and that helped us a lot,” Mok said.
Kalani didn’t take full advantage of Leilehua’s zone defense, shooting 5-for-21 from the arc. One of their sharpshooters, Heidi Kishaba, did not play due to illness.
The Falcon defense was swarming, however. They held the visiting Mules to 0-for-12 shooting from the field in the second quarter, 4-for-26 in the first half. Leilehua also had 10 turnovers by the break.
Kamelamela finished with six points. The Mules battled on the boards and were outrebounded by a narrow margin, 41-40. They shot 26 percent from the field (15-for-58), including 3-for-17 from the arc.
