Overnight temperatures dip into 50s as heavy rains approach, high surf eases

A high surf advisory for the north- and west-facing shores of smaller isles stretching from Niihau to Molokai, and the west-facing shores of Maui, remains in effect through 6 p.m. this evening. A high surf advisory for west-facing shores of the Big Island also remains in effect through 6 p.m. today.

The large, northwest swell has peaked, and is on a downward trend, with surf expected to reach 6 to 9 feet along west-facing shores of the Big Island through this evening.

Weather officials warn of strong, breaking waves and strong longshore and rip currents, making swimming difficult and dangerous. Beachgoers, swimmers, and surfers should exercise caution and heed all advice given by Ocean Safety officials.

Temperatures have been dipping below 60 degrees Fahrenheit overnight and reached a low of 54 degrees at Kahului Airport and 58 degrees at Kalaeloa Airport overnight. Breezy trades are expected tonight, with isolated showers in the evening and scattered showers after midnight.

Lows are expected to reach between 56 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit on Oahu, depending on region, with south winds of about 10 to 20 miles per hour.

A cold front, meanwhile, is approaching the islands from the northwest, and due to reach Kauai Thursday morning, bringing rain and thunderstorms. It is expected to move across Oahu late Thursday afternoon, then Maui County Thursday night, forecasters said. Remnants of the front are expected to reach the Big Island on Friday afternoon.

But it won’t be time to put the sweaters away yet. Forecasters said another cold front is expected to move through Hawaii in the first half of next week, bringing additional showers to the western isles.
