If you’re thinking of ways to encourage a healthier, more active lifestyle for your keiki in the new year, consider 808 Basketball Club’s basketball clinics, Sundays at Roosevelt High School’s gym. The year-round program, which started in 1996, is for boys and girls in preschool through high school.
In addition to getting a great workout, young athletes are able to learn and increase their basketball skills through fundamental and advanced training, said Coach Hinano Higa with 808 Basketball Club.
“We take all ages and all levels of skill,” Higa said. “Work at your pace and we try our best to get to every participant.”
The program also offers participants a possibility to play on one of 808 Basketball’s club teams or travel teams.
“If you make our travel team, knowing what 808 Basketball is about is important. … Loving your teammates and the program you get the privilege to be a part of, embracing the journey of becoming part of something bigger than yourself,” Higa noted.
Participation in the Sunday clinic requires a nominal weekly fee, which covers facility use and necessary equipment.
“We are a nonprofit organization but we don’t pay anyone, not even ourselves,” the coach said. “Everyone is a volunteer and we love what we do.”
