Here we are again — Dec. 31 — putting up with illegal fireworks bombs that have made neighborhoods occasionally sound like a war zone for the last two months.
The Star-Advertiser’s editorial lamented the situation, offering the usual suggestions of increased law enforcement and neighborhood vigilance (“Fireworks outlaws must be deterred,” Star-Advertiser, Our View, Dec. 31). Both are urged every year and neither has made a difference.
In fact, problems have only increased because those firing off the illegal fireworks know the likelihood of being caught red-handed by police or turned in by neighbors is slim to none.
Also in the Dec. 31 paper is an Associated Press story about the New York Police Department using drones to watch over Times Square during the New Year’s celebration (“Police drone to watch over Times Square”). Obviously keeping the Big Apple safe is a huge responsibility, but the use of drones is intriguing.
It seems to me that a camera in the sky that can catch them in the act may put those who break the law with impunity on edge, or at least make them think twice and give us all some peace. Can we at least think about it?
