Lei Day Court applications due on Friday

A Lei Day celebration that included a Lei Queen & Court and a lei contest exhibit. 2019 Lei Court applicants will be judged on their lei-making abilities, hula performance, poise, personality and public speaking in English and Hawaiian.
City officials are reminding the public that applications for the 2019 Lei Court are due by this Friday.
The 2019 Lei Court, including a selected Lei Queen, serve as the city’s “Ambassadors of Aloha” at a variety of public events and are present for the annual Lei Day Celebration festivities May 1. Last year, the city chose Charlene Leimomi Irvine, a retired medical transcriptionist for Queen’s Medical Center, hula dancer and mother of four as the 90th Lei Queen.
Applicants this year are open to those in the Na Opio, or youth age group of 18 to 30 years of age by the day of the selection event on March 2 to qualify. The theme for the 2019 Lei Day Celebration is Lei Kahakai, or Seashore Lei.
During the selection event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 2 at Kapolei Hale, which is free and open to the public, applicants will be judged on their lei-making abilities, hula performance, poise, personality and public speaking in English and Hawaiian.
Applications are available online, while more information on the “Lei Day Celebration” is available at honoluluparks.com. Free lei making workshops will take place at various district parks around Oahu leading up to to the 92nd Annual Lei Day Celebration May 1st at Kapiolani Regional Park.
