Maui man is first traffic fatality of 2019

A 20-year-old man died in a single-vehicle crash on Maui on New Year’s Day.

He was identified as Mau Loa Pacheco of Kula, according to a Maui Police Department news release.

Police said a 2004 Honda CR-V multi-purpose vehicle operated by Pacheco was traveling southbound on Pulehu Road in Kula at approximately 6:18 a.m. when he attempted to negotiate a curve in the roadway.

He lost control of the vehicle, crossed the centerline and struck a dirt embankment. Police said the vehicle flipped and rolled into a metal utility pole near Omaopio Road.

Pacheco was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is unclear at this time whether speed, alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.

Police are continuing their investigation.

This is Maui County’s first traffic-related fatality for the year. There were no traffic-related fatalities on Maui County at the same time last year.
