A traffic accident in Waiahole cut off electricity to 1,675 Hawaiian Electric Co. customers, and repair crews worked to restore power to the last six remaining customers Sunday night.
Neighborhoods affected by the outage included Ahuimanu, Heeia, Kahaluu, Kaneohe and Temple Valley.
That accident and another, unrelated one caused traffic backups on Kamehameha Highway. Honolulu police closed the highway in both directions at Waiahole Valley Road after one crash knocked down a utility pole and caused the outage. Police contra-flowed traffic in the area around 10 a.m.
Then, shortly after noon, police closed Kamehameha Highway in both directions at Ipuka Road in Heeia. Police reported seeing sparks and flames coming from a utility pole.
Residents on Okana Place were the first to report losing power at 11:21 a.m.
HECO switched to other circuits and got most of the affected customers back on line by 12:45 p.m. but continued to work into the night to get power fully restored.
