Public urged to stay out of Ko Olina lagoons because of possible contamination
The state Department of Health this afternoon issued a brown water advisory for two lagoons at Ko Olina Resort.
High surf has resulted in stormwater runoff entering into coastal waters and advisories were issued for Lagoon 3, also known as Naia Lagoon, and Lagoon 4, also known as Ulua Lagoon, the Health Department said.
The public is advised to stay out of flood waters and storm water runoff due to possible contamination from overflowing cesspools, sewers, and manholes, as well as pesticides, animal fecal matter, pathogens, chemicals, and associated flood debris. While some coastal areas may not be impacted by runoff, the public is advised to stay out of the water if it is brown.
The department also urged the public to practice good personal hygiene and follow up with a primary care physician with any health concerns.
