A pizza party and fun family flick are among two sensory-friendly events organized by the Autism Society of Hawaii, which serves children and adults touched by autism and autism-spectrum disorders.
The events — a lunch Monday at Chuck E. Cheese’s in Kalihi and a screening of the new animated film “Ralph Breaks the Internet” Dec. 1 at ‘Olino by Consolidated Theatres in Kapolei — provide a controlled environment suited for those on the autism spectrum and with sensory issues.
At both events, the sound is turned down, lights are adjusted and knowledgeable staff are on hand.
“Individuals are among their peers, who also have autism, and no one is judging them for how they react or behave, and can truly enjoy the outing,” said Dennis C. Maher, board president of the Autism Society of Hawaii. “It also provides an opportunity for families who share similar challenges to connect and maybe share ideas, or just bond.”
Families are grateful for such sensory-friendly events and children really enjoy them, Maher said.
“They can be themselves,” he said.
