A fire burns a small plantation home this morning in Puunene on Maui.

Firefighters are investigating the cause of a fire today that destroyed a plantation home that was being occupied by homeless people in Puunene, Maui firefighters said.

The fire started at about 9 a.m. on Hansen Road and engulfed the roughly 700-square foot home by the time firefighters arrived at the scene, across the street from the Puunene Post Office.

Firefighters contained the blaze to the abandoned structure and were able to keep it from spreading to nearby grass fields.

Firefighters said the home appeared to be occupied by homeless people and is close to the closed Puunene Mill and smoke stack.

A damage estimate was not available.
