Maui County firefighters engineered a rope system to rescue a 27-year-old man who fell approximately 60 feet down a little-known trail on Saturday.
At 6:26 p.m., firefighters responded to an area near mile marker 28 on Piilani Highway, where they found a the man who had fallen from the edge of the trail and was lodged into a crevasse. He had been hiking with a female companion who was uninjured and able to direct rescue crews to his location.
The man was alert but suffered open fractures to his right wrist and right femur and numerous cuts and bruises to his arms and face. It took firefighters nearly two hours to hoist him out using a stokes basket.
