A nighttime walk to a waterfall by the light of a full moon may sound like a dream, but you can do just that at the Waimea Valley Moon Walk on Oct. 19 — the final full-moon walk of the year at the valley.
“For these special nights when the moon is shining bright, you can come down and walk the main path to the waterfall,” said Waimea Valley special events manager Kimberly Anguiano. “When you are in the valley in the day, you see all the beautiful and exotic plants everywhere, but at night your other senses of smell, touch and sound take over and you have a totally different experience.”
The walks begin with an oli (chant) protocol by the Waimea Valley cultural staff, who explain why they chant, giving visitors insight into Hawaiian culture and practices. Staff members also go over safety instructions. (Swimming at the waterfall won’t be allowed.)
“There are cultural and botanical staff walking up the valley with you and although it is not a guided tour, you can ask questions,” Anguiano added. “They point out some flowers that only bloom at night or may be more fragrant in the evening.”
