For its selfie-oriented millennial generation of fans, the Streetlight Cadence alt-folk-pop band is prepping to launch “Will Play for Food,” 7 p.m. Wednesday on KFVE-TV.
With empty pockets but armed with musical instruments and a desire to share a slate of songs, the Streetlighters will be in full
selfie-mode: self-performing, self-shooting, self-producing, self-editing and self-publicizing its innovative TV series described as a reality show with elements of a travelogue and live on-the-road performances laced with foodie chatter.
“Literally, we’ll perform for food and spend whatever we earn for a meal wherever we go,” said Brian Webb, electric cellist for the four-member band with Hawaii roots. He and his musical buddies Jonathan Franklin, violin and guitar; Jesse Shiroma, accordion; and Ben Chai, drums and guitar, will spend whatever fans contribute to buy their nightly meal.
“I like the concept, a lifestyle show with music and food, from various cities,” said John Fink, general manager of KFVE, who was charmed by what he heard and saw when Streetlight Cadence appeared at an earlier Hawaii Grammy music event. “I told them if they’d give me 13 episodes, I’d give them a prime-time slot,” and the deal was sealed, said Fink.
It’s literally a bare-bones project, playing on the street charms of the Streetlighters, former buskers in Waikiki before elevating to club and showroom gigs. The band invested in new Sony camcorders to shoot, compile and frame episodes around one city for each episode.
“We take turns with the camera; we produce the content, edit and perform our original music,” said Webb. “Ben, our new guy in the group, is good at it, so we’re all learning as we’re going.”
The group’s musical repertoire targets millennials but its appeal ramps up to
seniors, too, possibly because of the band’s energetic, kinetic and wholesome performances, usually including leaps and swirls, and constant motion.
The group’s poverty level might be exaggerated, but Webb said they’ve crashed on couches at the homes of supportive fans
after eating meals with a family.
Webb said the locale or content of the premiere episode still has not been determined, though Streetlight Cadence has already shot footage in Tokyo, the Bahamas, San Diego, Las Vegas and Vancouver, B.C. Plans include filming on Oahu and Kauai in the coming weeks.
“We take one whole day to film a show, and we’re looking for airline and hotel partners down the line,” said Webb.
Fink predicts “Will Play for Food” — often uttered by the group from the stage — will connect with audiences. “The kids are talented, the music appealing; they’re good souls.”
Each Wednesday episode will repeat Sundays, said Fink, and the show’s episodes will be viewable at k5thehometeam.com.
“Will Play for Food” airs at 7 p.m., Wednesdays on KFVE-TV starting this week, with a rebroadcast at 4 p.m. Sept. 30.
