A man who was taken into police custody after his 91-year-old father was found with life-threatening injuries died of asphyxiation due to a self-inflicted injury, according to an autopsy report.
Thomas Woods was found unresponsive in a temporary cell at the South Kohala Police Station around
12:50 a.m. Sunday and taken to the North Hawaii Community Hospital, where he died.
The previous day, police responding to a call from the mainland found Woods and his father barricaded in a Kanehoa Street residence in Waimea. Police said Woods was heard threatening to kill his father before he was
subdued.
Police found Woods’ father tied up, with severe injuries, in a bedroom. He was taken in critical condition to North Hawaii Community Hospital, where he remains.
Police had initiated a second-degree attempted murder investigation relating to the father’s injuries, but Woods had not been arrested or charged at the time of his death.
Police have initiated a
coroners inquest into Woods’ death.
