A 25-year-old Kaneohe man began serving an 18-month prison term Thursday for killing another motorist in a drunken driving crash in Leeward Oahu two years ago.
Kalani Lessary pleaded no contest to first-degree negligent homicide in May.
State Circuit Judge Shirley Kawamura included the 18 months as a condition of a five-year probation sentence Thursday and ordered Lessary into custody to immediately begin serving the prison term. She also fined Lessary $1,000.
Honolulu police said Lessary was driving west on Farrington Highway on Sept. 10, 2016, and crashed into another vehicle making a turn onto the highway from Nanakuli Avenue. The other driver, Matt Moe, 49, of Waianae, later died in the hospital.
Police said they found alcoholic beverages in Lessary’s vehicle and that his blood alcohol concentration was 0.15. The legal threshold for drunken driving is 0.08 BAC. They also said Lessary was speeding.
