Police said excessive speed appeared to be a factor in a Pauoa crash that left a man in critical condition Friday night.
The driver, a 21-year-old Honolulu man, was speeding northbound on Kanealii Avenue when his pickup truck crossed the center line north of Booth District Park and struck a utility pole on the other side of the street at about 10:45 p.m., police said.
The truck continued on for about 200 feet before striking two parked vehicles and overturning. The driver was thrown onto the road. Paramedics treated and transported the man to a hospital in critical condition, according to Emergency Medical Services.
Injured hikers rescued from Makaha Valley
Two hikers, a man in his 60s and a teenage boy, were injured in a fall while hiking in Makaha Valley Saturday.
Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Scot Seguirant said the two sustained minor injuries while hiking above the water tanks on Kili Drive and found themselves “in a position where they couldn’t go up or down.”
Firefighters responded to the 3 p.m. distress call, and a helicopter dropped two rescue personnel into the area. The rescuers reached the hikers at 4:08 p.m. and they were airlifted out. Fire personnel transferred the pair at 4:29 p.m. to the care of Emergency Medical Services.
