The University of Hawaii football team has found a quick fix at wide receiver, landing a speedy player from California.
James Green III, a 2018 graduate of Cathedral City High, told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser he is joining the Rainbow Warriors next week. Green will report on July 26, the first day of the Warriors’ training camp.
It was earlier confirmed that wideouts Kalakaua Timoteo and Isaia Leeth did not meet the eligibility requirements to play for the Warriors this season. This week, wideout John Johnson of Antelope Valley College announced he was joining the Warriors. Green also is expected to bring a vertical threat to the Warriors’ resurrected run-and-shoot offense.
Green is 6 feet and 190 pounds.
He said he was laser-timed at 10.75 seconds over 100 meters. He also has reached 22 feet, 7 inches in the long jump.
It was during the track season when Green attracted notice. Green, who had committed to play at Montana Tech, an NAIA school, decided he wished to play at Hawaii.
Of his decision, Green said: “It’s Hawaii. That’s kind of hard to pass up. … I didn’t really want to be in the snow and the cold (in Montana).”
Green was born in California, but moved to Nampa, Idaho, when he was 5. He lived there through the sixth grade, after which his family moved back to California. Cathedral City is located near Palm Springs.
As a junior, Green had 71 receptions for 1,069 yards and 10 touchdowns. He was named to the Desert Sun’s Elite 11.
He had 73 catches for more than 1,100 yards and 11 touchdowns last season.
He played cornerback and running back, and also was used as the wildcat quarterback. “I was all over the place,” Green said.
Green is projected to compete initially at wideout for the Warriors. But he has been told he also has the flexibility to line up in the slot.
