FEMA assistance available to Hawaii island non-profits

ASSOCIATED PRESS

The Kilauea Volcano east rift zone eruption continues mainly from a fissure and forms a river of lava flowing down to Kapoho on June 10 in Pahoa.

Non-profits and faith-based organizations on Hawaii island with expenses or damage related to the ongoing Kilauea eruption may be eligible for the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Public Assistance program.

This can include private schools, hospitals, homeless shelters, senior citizen centers and food programs, according to a news release from the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency. In addition, faith-based organizations, schools, or community centers that provide emergency measures such as sheltering and feeding survivors on behalf of the state, may be reimbursed for the costs of those services.

Only organizations with state or IRS tax-exempt status, however, can be considered. The deadline for applications is Saturday.

More information is available at FEMA.gov under the Public Assistance Program and Policy Guide. Interested private, non-profits can also email OahuLava1@hi-ema.net or call 733-4300, ext. 801, for more information or to receive a Request for Public Assistance.
